WHERE IS JACK
Tony McLoughlin / Marlon Klein / Win Kowa
A chance meeting of Marlon Klein (percussionist/founder of the legendary world music band DISSIDENTEN /composer/producer and recording engineer) with Tony McLoughlin (cult status singer /guitarist/songwriter and recording artist in the roots/rock/americana style) has led to an exciting new “tribal-rock” album.

Tony McLoughlin & Marlon Klein – Where Is Jack
On reading through the biographies of these two musicians, comes the feeling that in the normal course of events Tony McLoughlin and Marlon Klein would not have been expected to cross paths. Singer and guitarist McLoughlin is native to the North of Ireland; he calls his background ‘Celtic’ with the likelihood of some ‘Viking’ blood in his ancestry. His name translates from the Gaelic as ‘Son of the deep water’. In the year 2000, his debut album ‘Cinérama’ was released from the studio of US Producer, Thomm Jutz (a native of the Black Forest as it happens). Jutz had worked also with Nanci Griffith, Mary Gauthier, David Olney, and Jim Lauderdale. So McLoughlin’s name became connected with the Nashville scene and his music categorized as ‘Americana’. Elements of Rock, Country, Blues, Folk and Roots combine in this now well recognized music type called ‘Americana’. For me, the great example of ‘Americana’ music might be ‘The Band’ muses the artist about the legends from the 60s and 70s. The fact that McLoughlin’s albums are seen as ‘Americana’ is a source of pride for him. “Perhaps this is my innate style” he comments with a wink of the eye.
Marlon Klein is a native of Herford in East-Westphalia, an influential musician during the pinnacle era of German Krautrock in the late 70s with the legendary Real Ax Band and then with Dissidenten from Berlin/Germany, achieving a pioneering role in the World Music scene. Rolling Stone dubbed the ‘trio’ which played together with jazz saxophonist Charlie Mariano, the Indian Karnataka College of Percussion, and the Moroccan superstar Lem Chaheb, as the ‘Godfathers of Worldbeat’. Albums such as ‘Germanisten’ and ‘Sahara Elektrik’ are unsurpassed classics. The long list of musicians with whom Marlon Klein has worked, as sideman or as studio producer, include Stephan Eicher, Trilok Gurtu, Jasper van’t Hof’s Pili-Pili, Angélique Kidjo and Gary Wright on whose album ex-Beatle George Harrison played.
“We met through a common acquaintance” explains Mcloughlin. This led to an unplanned session together in a Nuremberg club. “Tony invited me on stage and I laid down the groove on some of his songs with Darbuka and Cajon. There was an immediate intuitive connection which we both enjoyed and this hinted towards an interesting new way of interpreting the songs in a rocky-percussive direction” remembers Klein. So these two full blooded musicians stayed in contact after this first encounter, sharing basic ideas, from continent to island, eventually developing little by little a sound which one can honestly call ‘Tribal Rock’. “It was very interesting to explore other rhythmic ideas and to move out of my comfort zone” recalls McLoughlin about these first steps. Out of this mutual ‘tribal energy’ the songs developed very organically into the finished ‘studio production’.
“I have always been eager to work with gifted singer-songwriters and with Tony’s special voice and authentic lyrics I immediately recognized the possibility of combining my love of Native American Pow-Wow music with his Celtic roots to create a new direction” explains Klein. He spent six months in the Six Nations Reservation in Canada and there he met the folk icon Buffy Sainte–Marie, a native Cree Indian. “Buffy finds our sound very cool” smiles the drummer. The tribal rock of the album ‘Where is Jack’ contains, alongside the Celtic/Indian feel, on further listening, many other inspirations and directions. There is a real ‘Flower-Power-Feeling’ and the true sense of a ‘Gathering’ in the music, like at a wonderful festival. Even if McLoughlin conjures up the spirits of Rory Gallagher, Johnny Cash and Buffalo Springfield as watermarks, the album ‘Where is Jack’, the debut from McLoughlin & Klein, is no nostalgic retro-project. Even when young hipsters and music freaks worship the ‘Man in Black’ and those other former heroes, the production and the grooves are ultramodern. The sound contains many new elements like using super low frequency hand drums for a kick, and, for a snare, mostly a Moroccan Bendir, a frame drum with rasping strings. “That is like a modern busking drumset” enthuses the drummer.
Klein and McLoughlin searched for soulmates to play on the recordings where necessary. Enter Coimín, Tony’s son, with his bass style incorporating the whole spectrum of modern rock sounds. Let others play the old school bass riffs.
Then came Roman Bunka, a German guitarist extraordinaire and a master of the Arabian lute. Bunka currently tours with Adel Tawil, Dissidenten, and the Egyptian superstar Mohammed Mounir. He fitted perfectly into the songs. “A musician,” Stereo-Magazine states, “who effortlessly draws people and culture together.” Finally Ben Reel, a fellow North of Ireland quality singer songwriter and touring colleague of Tony’s, came in on harmony vocals. So one is reminded of a White Stripes feel on a Tarantino soundtrack, but there are also some numbers with a subtly threatening sound like those which are often used on the hit TV series ‘True Detectives’(with Matthew McConaughey).
One last question remains: Who the f*** is Jack? We asked each musician separately. Still they unanimously answered: We will answer that with the release of our next album… Detlef Kinsler

Pressinfo German:
Tony McLoughlin & Marlon Klein – Where Is Jack
Bleibt nur noch eine Frage: Who the f*** is Jack? Wir haben die beiden Musiker unabhängig voneinander befragt. Die dennoch einmütige Antwort: „Das beantworten wir erst mit der nächsten Platte …“ Detlef Kinsler

WHERE IS JACK
(McLoughlin/Klein)
I’M ON THE RAIL , I’M ON THE ROAD
I’M RUNNING , DON’T YOU KNOW
HERE COME THE WIND , HERE COME THE RAIN
HERE COME COME MY PAIN , AGAIN
AIN’T GOT NO HOUSE , AIN’T GOT NO HOME
AIN’T GOT NOBODY , I’M A ROLLING STONE
I’M MOVING FAST , I’M MOVING SLOW
I’M MOVING , DON’T YOU KNOW
I’M ONLY RUNNING
THE MOON IS UP , THE SUN GONE DOWN
I CAN SEE FOR MILES , ON THE WESTERN PLAIN
TO THE HORIZON , THAT NEVER ENDS
IT REACHES OUT , THEN STARTS AGAIN
I’M A LONESOME TRAVELLER , ON A LOST HIGHWAY
I’M BOUND TO RAMBLE , DAY BY DAY
THIS WAS THE STORY , THE SADDEST PART
OF A BROKEN MAN , WITH A BROKEN HEART
I’M ONLY RUNNING
I’M SAD AND LONESOME , I’M TIRED AND BLUE
OH BABY , WHAT YOU OUT ME THROUGH
THAT’S HOW IT IS , THAT’S HOW IT GOES
AND IN THE END , HELL NO ONE KNOWS
BUT ONE FINE DAY , AND THAT’S FOR SURE
THE SUN WILL SHINE ON MY FACE ONCE MORE
HERE COME THE WIND , HERE COME THE RAIN
BUT NO MORE TEARS , AND NO MORE PAIN
I’M ON THE RAIL , I’M ON THE ROAD
I’M RUNNING , DON’T YOU KNOW
I’M ONLY RUNNING
I’M ONLY RUNNING
I’M ONLY RUNNING
I’M ONLY RUNNING
FROM YOU

I’M ON MY WAY
(McLoughlin/Klein)
WHEN THE GREAT NORTH WIND IS BLOWING
THAT’S THE TIME THAT I’LL BE GOING
TO HEAD BACK TO THE PLACE THAT I CAME FROM
I’LL TAKE MY RIFLE BY MY SIDE
WITH THE STARS TO BE MY GUIDE
WALKING STRAIGHT AND TALL AND ON AND ON
YOU CANNOT HOLD FROM MY PATH
YOU CANNOT TURN ME WITH YOUR WRATH
THIS JOURNEY MAKES ME WHOLE AND MAKES ME STRONG
BURN MY BODY WHEN I DIE
LET MY SPIRIT CROSS THE SKY
LET MY ASHES FALL ON TO THE PRECIOUS SOIL
MOTHER EARTH WILL TAKE MY BLOOD
DROPS WILL SOON BECOME A FLOOD
NOTHING GETS LOST OR THROWN AWAY
LIKE A GHOST THAT WALKS THE LAND
OF BEAUTY FROM NATURE’S HAND
THIS PLACE THAT YOU CALL HERE IS NOT MY HOME
I CAN FLY
I CAN SOAR
I’M ON MY WAY
WE LOST THE BATTLE BUT NOT THE WAR
I CAN FLY
WE ARE A PART OF THE WHOLE
I’M ON MY WAY
YOU CAN LOSE YOUR LIFE BUT NOT YOUR SOUL

HEART OF DARKNESS
(McLoughlin/Reel/Klein)
I TOOK THREE HUNDRED LASHES FROM A RHINO HIDE BULLWHIP
I LIVED TO TELL THE TALE
I FOLLOWED THAT BASTARD TO THE SHORES OF LAKE ALBERT
CUT OUT HIS HEART , THEY PUT ME IN JAIL
AFTER 39 (29) DAYS I BUSTED OUT OF THAT HOLE
I CHEATED ON THE HANGMAN
FROM THE CONGO RIVER BASIN TO THE BLUE BLUE NILE
I LAID A TRAIL OF DEATH AND MAYHEM
SURRENDER IN THE HEART OF DARKNESS
BLOODY , DISABLED , DISARMED
RESURRECTION MAN , THAT’S WHO I AM
I WAS A BLACK HEARTED VILLAIN ON THE OPIUM TRAIL
MISERY FOLLOWED MY NAME
BLOOD FLOWED DOWN THE GANGES AS WE BUTCHERED AND MAIMED
ON THE HIGHWAY FROM INDIA
WE LOADED THE SHIPS ON THE BANKS OF THE BENGAL
LEGALIZED DRUG WARLORDS
WE FOUGHT (BROUGHT) THE CHINESE EMPIRE TO ITS KNEES
MERCENARIES FOR THE QUEEN
SURRENDER IN THE HEART OF DARKNESS
BLOODY , DISABLED , DISARMED
RESURRECTION MAN , THAT’S WHO I AM
I AM A VENGEFUL ASSASSIN AND I’LL DIE BY THE SWORD
MURDER , MUTINY , AND MAYHEM
UNDER THE CRY “SEIZE , BURN , AND , DESTROY”
WE ARE KILLERS , LIARS , CHEATS , AND MADMEN
I CARRY MANY FLAGS , I USE ANY AND ALL DECEPTION
A PIRATE AND A PRIVATEER (MUTINEER)
THE EMISSARY OF PITY WHEN YOU’RE DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
I AM THE JUDGE WHEN YOU PLEAD FOR MERCY (PITY)

HE’S A BOMBMAKER , HE’LL BLOW YOU AWAY
ONE WAY OR THE OTHER IT’S YOUR DYING DAY , HEY HEY
DOWN IN THE DESERT SOMEWHERE IN THE SAND
MUHADEEN TRANSMITTER IN HIS HAND

YOU CAN CROSS THE MUDDY WATER

YOU CAN TELL EVERYBODY
TELL THEM WHAT YOU’VE DONE

BUT WHEN YOU SEE ME COMING
ONE OF THESE DAYS
YOU’RE A LONG TONGUE LIAR
THERE’S A PRICE YOU GOTTA PAY
HERE COME THE MIDNIGHT RIDER
YOU DIRTY BACK BITER YOU GONNA PAY
WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN
IN THE GREAT NORTH SKY
I’LL BE STANDING IN THE SHADOWS
I’LL BE WAITING CLOSE BY
GONNA BIDE MY TIME
MAYBE WIT TILL DAWN
YOU’LL BE SHAKING IN YOUR BOOTS
YOU’LL SING ANOTHER SONG
BUT WHEN YOU SEE ME COMING
ONE OF THESE DAYS
YOU’RE A LONG TONGUE LIAR
THERE’S A PRICE YOU GOTTA PAY

SACRED NIGHTS
(McLoughlin/Klein)
THESE ARE THE BRIGHT DAYS , THESE ARE THE SACRED NIGHTS
THESE ARE THE RESTLESS SOULS , HEARTS BURNING BRIGHT
I WOULD NOT TURN AWAY , I WOULD NOT LEAVE YOU THERE
I WOULD RECOGNISE YOU ANYWHERE
WE ARE THE OTHER KIND , WE ARE THE OTHER LOVE
WE ARE THE OTHER WORLD , HIGH ABOVE
WE ARE THE WINDS OF CHANGE
WE ARE THE SANDS OF TIME FROM ANOTHER AGE
AND WE WILL SING OUR SONG
WE WILL CARRY THE LIGHT ON AND ON
I WANT TO SEE YOUR FACE , I WANT TO TOUCH YOUR HAND
I WANT TO WALK BESIDE YOU , THROUGH THE LAND
THESE ARE THE BRIGHT DAYS , THESE ARE THE SACRED NIGHTS
THESE ARE THE RESTLESS SOULS , HEARTS BURNING BRIGHT
WE ARE THE WINDS OF CHANGE
WE ARE THE SANDS OF TIME FROM ANOTHER AGE
AND WE WILL SING OUR SONG
WE WILL CARRY THE LIGHT ON AND ON

SPANISH BOOTS
(McLoughlin/Klein)
WELL I COME FROM THE LAND OF THE RISING MOON
AND I’VE SEEN ONE OR TWO STRANGE THINGS
THEY TIED A MAN ON A MATTRESS IN A MID-ULSTER TOWN
FACE DOWN IN THE RIVER , AND LET HIM SINK
THE LAWS OF GOD AND THE LAWS OF MEN SEEM TO
TWIST AND TURN AND MYSTIFY
THEY TIED A MAN ON A MATTRESS IN A MID-ULSTER TOWN
FACE DOWN IN THE RIVER AND LET HIM DIE
ON OUR WAY FROM THE DISCO THE FIREBOMB BLEW
TWO YOUNG REBELS THEY COULD NOT RUN
THE BLACK WATCH HELD US BACK AS THETHE FLAMES REACHED HIGHER
THEY LET THOSE FENIANS BURN
I’VE GOT MORE THAN MOST MEN I’VE GOT MY EYES ON THE ROAD
I’VE GOT SOME PEOPLE I CAN CALL MY FRIENDS
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING , RUNNING ROUND
I COME FROM THE LAND OF THE RISING SUN
WHERE THE WARRIOR KINGS CAME BEFORE
BUT THIS TIME ROUND IT WAS NO CELTIC DREAM
JUST ANOTHER KIND OF DIRTY WAR
THE LAWS OF GOD AND THE LAWS OF MEN SEEM TO
TWIST AND TURN AND MYSTIFY
BUT IF YOU’RE SATISFIED OR A VICTIM THERE COMES A TIME
YOU GOTTA SIT DOWN AND ASK YOURSELF WHY
YOU HATE MINE AND I HATE YOURS ‘TIL WE ALL HATE EVERYTHING
BUT WE’RE TRAVELLING NOW DOWN THIS GLORY ROAD (PEACE AND LOVE)
AND EVERYBODY WANTS TO HEAR US SING
I’VE GOT MORE THAN MOST MEN I’VE GOT MY EYES ON THE ROAD
I’VE GOT SOME PEOPLE I CAN CALL MY FRIENDS
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING , RUNNING ROUND
PEACE IS YOURS AND PEACE IS MINE AND PEACE IS EVERYTHING
IN THE END THERE’S NO DIFFERENCE WE’RE ALL THE SAME
THESE WASTED WORDS ARE JUST DRIFTING IN THE WIND
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING
I’VE GOT MY SPANISH BOOTS FOR RUNNING , RUNNING ROUND
