ON TOUR 2015:

DISSIDENTEN

FEATURING

MOHAMED MOUNIR

When Mohamed Mounir joined Facebook May 2014, he had more than 5 Million followers within weeks. Mounir is an iconic Egyptian singer and film star. His pop-oriented music has its roots in traditional music from Nubia, Egypt, Sudan and African Reggae.

From Alexandria to Aswan, the voice of Mohamed Mounir is as familiar to Egyptians as that of a brother or father or closest of friends. His warm, sweet contralto is an integral part of Egyptʼs soundscape, blasting day and night from countless CD- selling kiosks, sidewalk cafés and automobiles. ʻWhen you listen to Mohamed Mounir, you listen to Egyptʼ proclaims a fanʼs website, and across the Arab world in the Arabic-speaking diaspora, millions have been listening to ʻthe kingʼ as he is called, for nearly thirty years. More than entertainment, Mounir offers his audience heartfelt encouragement with a bouncy beat and fine turn of phrase. But his words also reflect Egyptʼs cultural values. ʻRarely has a musical artist delved so deeply for the cultural truths behind appearances, or tapped so accurately into the popular esprit. Singing alternately in classical Arabic, Egyptian colloquial or the half-forgotten language of his native Nubia, Mounirʼs songs speak to individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

“The World” has always been the main subject of Dissidenten. In more than three decades the band has overcome boundaries of cultures by initiating countless projects, performing concerts and festivals all over the world. More than 20 albums present their unique work.

The Penguin Encyclopedia of Popular Music: “Since the term ʻWorld Musicʼ entered the music lexicon in the early1980s the name Dissidenten has been synonymous with, and at the forefront of ʻWorld Musicʼ. After all, it was the Rolling Stone that dubbed them “Godfathers of World-Beat” long before the term became popular.”
